Exercise 2

Second Agendas

In this exercise we will look at second agendas. Second agendas are unconscious intentions, or hidden agendas, that conflict with what we think we want.

Recall a time when you had a second agenda, one that you were not conscious of but that you discovered afterwards. In other words, you thought you had one intention but you really had another intention that you were unaware of.

For example, you felt that you intended to lose weight and eat healthy food. However, your real intention was to eat healthy food most of the time and comfort food when a frightened part of your personality felt like indulging.

Why did you take these two contradictory paths?

Were you stressed or overwhelmed?

Or did someone hurt your feelings?

What were the consequences?

In this example, you probably gained weight.

Take a moment to recall a time when you had a second agenda that you didn’t recognize until later.

What consequences did this hidden agenda create?

Your intentions determine your experiences, whether or not you are aware of them. When you become aware of your intentions, you can change your experiences by changing your intentions.
