The IMF, Sex, And Authentic Power

The IMF, Sex, And Authentic Power

The worlds of politics and gossip are fixated on the arrest and indictment of Dominique Strauss-Kahn, Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for multiple first-degree felony counts, including committing a criminal sex act, attempted rape and sexual abuse – all on a maid in a $3,000.00 a night hotel suite during a visit to New York City. The International Monetary Fund is a prestigious organization in global economics. Dominique Strauss-Kahn was also the most likely politician to unseat President Nicolas Sarkozy in the coming French elections. In short, he could have been (and many thought he would have been) the next President of France. What could he have wanted that he could not have bought or manipulated for himself? What drove him to impose himself upon a fellow human in such a brutal way?

What drove President Bill Clinton to have sex in the White House with a young woman while he was the most publically scrutinized person in the world? What could have driven him to have sex with a young woman under any circumstances? What drove Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to have sex with a house keeper who tended his wife and children for two decades and who worked in the same house with them? What drove a US Senator to seek gay sex from an unknown man – who turned out to be a police officer – in an airport restroom and the Governor of New York to buy sex from a young female prostitute while he campaigned against immorality? What attracted these powerful people to risk everything and then to loose everything?

Perhaps they were not powerful at all. How could they be powerful if the opportunity for sex attracted them more than creating world peace, eradicating hunger and disease, healing the environment, freeing the oppressed, protecting the defenseless, and contributing to the collective well-being in ways they were privileged to do? How could they be powerful if grasping for sex was more important to them than their families, children, and those who trusted them? Each was extraordinarily successful at manipulation and control, but as millions of us are now understanding, the ability to manipulate and control is not authentic power. It is only power over things external, such as people and circumstances. External power comes and goes, as Mr. Strauss-Kahn has discovered and those who are following his self-created difficulties are witnessing.

The only thing that Dominique Strauss-Kahn could have wanted that external power could not have attained for him was a sense of self-worth, of belonging to Life, of being lovable and loving. These are experiences of authentic power. They must be created and the process is as challenging as it is transformative. It is the journey from unempowered to empowered, from victim to creator, from emptiness to meaning, and from pain to joy. Raping a maid cannot produce it. Directing the International Monetary Fund cannot produce it. Even becoming President of the United States cannot produce it.

This is a time to learn about ourselves, not to condemn these men. Where and when did you last impose yourself on a partner, child, colleague, or stranger in order to feel safe and valuable, even if only for a moment? In other words, when did you last act on anger, jealousy, resentment, superiority, or inferiority? Their acts are condemnable, but these men are not. They chose to pursue external power instead of create authentic power. We face the same challenges as they, and sometimes we make the same decisions they made. We can learn about ourselves from them and apply what we learn to consciously create a better, more aware, and healthier world.

25 YEARS OF THE SEAT OF THE SOUL

25 YEARS OF THE SEAT OF THE SOUL

Twenty–five years ago I published a book that I did not know if anyone would read. My publisher had been waiting seven years for a sequel to my first book, The Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview of the New Physics. The manuscript I gave her was entirely different, but she published it anyway in Spring 1989. I called the new book The Seat of the Soul. This book immediately began to help people in meaningful ways, and in 1998 Oprah Winfrey and I cocreated a television show about it that aired on Christmas Eve afternoon. Almost everything changed for me after that. Oprah and I began doing audience shows the next Spring, and we did over thirty of them. Oprah needed to share The Seat of the Soul, too. This month the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Seat of the Soul was released.

I did not change the text of the original, but Oprah and Maya Angelou wrote remarkable prefaces for it, and I wrote a new foreword. The big change in the new edition, however, is the one that engaged me, transformed me, and liberated me in ways I could not have foreseen: the 85-page Study Guide in the back. The Study Guide helps you apply the principles in The Seat of the Soul to your everyday life in practical ways and to see more clearly the enormity of the context in which they are becoming visible – the expansion of everyone’s perception within a few generations beyond the limitations of the five senses. Each chapter in The Seat of the Soul has a corresponding Study Guide chapter. Each Study Guide chapter has opening paragraphs, questions, and different kinds of exercises. Before I began working on this Study Guide, I had not thought about explaining the principles in The Seat of the Soul this way. Once I began, I could not stop. Each chapter of the book became a surprising and deeply gratifying exploration for me.

I wanted the questions in the Study Guide to be meaningful, not intellectual, to draw from deeper places than thought, to elicit answers beyond words, to open new doorways. This required only an interest in supporting you, and that was deepest in my heart. The opening paragraphs, however, required me to dive deeply into chapters I had read many times before, clarifying everything that I felt might be unclear or need attention. I reread The Seat of the Soul four times. Just when I thought the Study Guide could not become more supportive, the idea occurred to me to add videos and audio meditations, and that required creating, in effect, a new website. Access to each page in this new website – which became the “Study Guide Extension” – is in the Study Guide at the back of the book. Now the whole thing is done – 25th Anniversary Edition with prefaces by Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou, Study Guide, and online Study Guide Extension. It is a joy to recommend them to you.

Some people might ask, “How could something written twenty-five years ago be engaging, much less liberating, to the person who wrote it? Understanding this requires understanding about inspiration, and how it comes from a source other than the mind. Before the mind can write anything, it needs to understand it in its own terms. All everyday writings are done in this way. But The Seat of the Soul is filled with things that do not present themselves in terms of the mind. They come from another place. That is why inspired people can not fathom with their minds the fullness of what they are writing, performing, and bringing into being as they are doing it. The mind can not fathom the fullness of inspired sharing because that kind of sharing comes from beyond the mind. They feel what they are sharing, express what they are sharing, and become what they are sharing, but they are not thinking about what they are sharing while they are sharing it. Thinking about it stops the process. Afterwards, the mind can recognize, appreciate, and revel in what inspiration has created. I have been recognizing, appreciating, and reveling in The Seat of the Soul for twenty-five years. Last year I began to see ways to help others do the same, and the result is the Study Guide and Study Guide Extension online in the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Seat of the Soul.

The publication of this new edition is so much more than the re-release of a classic book. It is an ongoing journey into love and nature of power – which are the same. I am grateful to share it with you.

Love,

THE NEW ARENA

This is a moment in the history of America and the history of the world in which we are beginning to experience in intimately personal terms the extent to which fear controls our activities. We are realizing for the first time as a species that personal growth is not a shallow or inconsequential activity. It is necessary and powerful. We are also appreciating for the first time as a species that challenging fear in ourselves and cultivating love in ourselves is the only way that we can change the world

All of this is entirely new. We are in completely new evolutionary terrain. There are no maps. All that we learned before – that our perception is limited to five senses, that power is the ability to manipulate and control, that individuals who do not possess it are insignificant – is now counterproductive. None of the old ways works any longer. New ways are calling to us.
They require commitmentcouragecompassion, and conscious communication and actions

Each choice of love is conscious participation in the evolution of your soul, in the evolution of all the collectives in which you participate, in the evolution of the Earth school, and in the evolution of Life itself. Each of us is responsible for what we create. The world reflects what we create. It shows us what we need to change in ourselves to create a reflection of harmonycooperationsharing, and reverence for Life.

We can learn this lesson from our experiences of this election, if we are open to learning it. This lesson is now coming into focus for millions as we evolve in an entirely different way, with an entirely different consciousness, and with an entirely different understanding of power – the alignment of the personality with the soul.

We have entered a startling new arena of human experience – the domain of nonphysical reality, Teachers, wisdom, and compassion. And our responsibilities in it are becoming unmistakable.

Love.

SYMPHONY OF PEACE PRAYERS

SYMPHONY OF PEACE PRAYERS

Peace + Prayer + Someone Else’s Country provided me a powerful experience that continues to shape me today. It happened two years ago in Japan at the base of Mt. Fuji. Twelve thousand (12,000!) people come every year to celebrate peace and pray for peace regardless of weather. Every country’s flag is brought to the center of a natural outdoor stage with Mt. Fuji in the background, and all the people pray for peace for the country of their choice and also for the optimal potential of that country to manifest. Everyone is given a laminated plastic flag of their choosing to use during the ceremony. When the flag of their country is brought out, they hold the image over their heads. It was wonderful to see the colors of so many countries held up again and again throughout the ceremony. I wanted to hold up all of them.

Linda and I returned the next year, and I had the same surprising, wonderful experience. I had expected to celebrate my own country’s flag and pray for the peace and potential of my own country, but I had not expected to be thrilled by praying for every country’s flag! They were all so important to me, so rich and so full of promise and potential. The sea of colors in front of us filled me with awe and wonder – at the uniqueness of us, the beauty of us, and the love of us. We were all “us.” I knew that in my thoughts and in my heart, but I felt it and I saw it those days.

Now those days remind me to cultivate my experiences at the base of Mt. Fuji every day. This year Linda and I will attend the ceremony, which is called the Symphony of Peace Prayers, by watching it stream live on the internet. (It is part of the “Fuji Declaration” anniversary celebration). We invite you to join us and our colleagues and the twelve thousand fellow students in the Earth school who will gather again at Mt. Fuji to pray for us and celebrate us – all of us. We will join you there in our hearts.

Love.
