ORLANDO, LOVE, AND LABELS

ORLANDO, LOVE, AND LABELS

“Terrorist” is a label. There is no humanity in labels. There is no compassion in labels. Labels create villains and idols. The pain of an individual who claims allegiance to a symbol of hate and righteousness and then kills without connection is extreme. However, that pain is not as extraordinary as it might seem. It is shared by all of us. This pain cannot be relieved by hunting, capturing, or killing labels, such as “terrorists” and “infidels.”

People who are most shocked by the violence in our world have the most to gain from looking inside themselves. The violence in our world comes from us. It is generated by the pain of wanting desperately to belong and not belonging, needing desperately to love and feeling unlovable, wanting intensely to love and feeling incapable, seeing ourselves as ugly inside, inherently flawed, and permanently defective. It is an ever-present ever-pressing need to be on the side of “God,” of “right,” of “good” regardless of the cost to others. This is the pain of powerlessness.

We experience powerless parts of our personalities as anger, rage, righteousness, judgment, and need for revenge. Acting on them creates the violence in the world. Those who actually pull triggers and detonate bombs are our proxy actors. Unchallenged pain of powerlessness in us fuels the violence them, and we see the results in Orlando, Paris, Iraq, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and every country and culture. Who pulled the trigger in Orlando? Who detonated the bombs in Boston and Baghdad? Our proxies. We held the gun in our fantasies of powerlessness. They detonated the bombs in theirs. What does pulling triggers and detonating bombs accomplish? It creates more violence, more hatred, more righteousness, and more labels.

To end violence in our world requires the courage to look inside ourselves. It requires asking, “Do I pull the trigger in my thoughts? Do I detonate bombs in my imagination? How often?” Every judgment and fantasy of violence carries the same energy as attacks with bullets and bombs. Ending the violence in the world requires finding in ourselves the parts of our personalities that label fellow souls as “terrorists” and “infidels” and challenging them by not acting on them. These are the parts that perceive others as without Divinity, and they perceive us the same way. When we disparage, judge, despise, or label another individual, we become like that individual, and we contribute more of what we disparage, despise, and judge to the world. If we have no compassion for those who have no compassion, what is the difference between us?

Everyone who is grief-stricken and saddened by the violence in Orlando, in Paris, in the Middle East, by the violence of poverty that is everywhere and always, now has an opportunity to feel the pain of powerlessness inside and still choose to respond with compassion. This requires courage. Those who are outraged, righteous, and tormented by hatred have the same opportunity. In this we are brothers and sisters to those who disparage, despise, judge, and label us. We give to one another opportunities to choose love instead of fear, to change the world once and for all and for good. We offer one another the gift of love that underlies appearances of “ally” and “adversary” and is deeper than we can imagine.

THE BIGGEST COMMUNITY

THE BIGGEST COMMUNITY

Imagine a community that includes everyone. This is impossible from the perspective that is limited to what we can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. From this perspective power is ability to manipulate and control, and everyone seeks it. Survival requires it, and human evolution requires survival.

From this perspective, communities are good things. Individuals who dress, behave, think, and believe alike are safe in them. Communities are shelters of sameness, and they are effective. As we become multisensory and begin to experience ourselves and our world beyond the limitations of the five senses, we recognize something so evident that we are shocked not to have seen it before. Communities do NOT bring individuals together. They keep them apart! They separate differences forever because frightened parts of our personalities forever fear differences.

Now we are leaving the domain of the five senses behind. Survival is no longer sufficient. Our evolution now demands spiritual development, and spiritual development opens the waterways of love. Soul-to-soul connections sweep away all distinctions between personalities – color, size, appearance, and belief. They become inconsequential to personalities as consciousness of their souls emerge within them.

We want to include, not exclude. We strive for love, not fear. Our emotions inform us, nonphysical Teachers assist us, and we ourselves choose the roads we will travel. All lead to home, and we are all travelers – now waking, now welcoming others along the way, now emerging with astonished eyes into a community without boundaries that includes everyone – the Biggest Community – and recognizing it for the first time as the home that has always been ours.

TOTAL ECLIPSE

Every eclipse of the sun represents symbolically the activation of a frightened part of your personality. While that part is active, it obstructs the experience of your love, which is represented symbolically by the sun. Yet in the midst of that obstruction there is a great deal of power and beauty that is visible physically in a total eclipse of the sun.
While the darkness obstructs the sun’s light, the great power of the sun can be seen around the perimeter of the darkness as bursts of energy, as brilliant displays of light. These are reminders of the cause of the darkness. It is an experience of a frightened part of your personality that is active. That part of your personality eclipses your love, and yet it is in consciously going into that experience of darkness that you develop the ability to move beyond its control. That is represented by the brilliance and power that is visible around the perimeter of the darkness when the eclipse is total.
When love is obstructed totally, there is still the power of love surrounding that obstruction. It is the reason for that obstruction – so that you can experience the obstruction, get to know it fully, and challenge it as it occurs and when it reoccurs – so that when it comes you recognize it for what it is, a temporary eclipse of your love.

A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE OF CHRISTMAS

A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE OF CHRISTMAS

The commercial christmas is the season of obligatory giving, unrestrained consumerism, family differences disguised as gatherings of the heart, and piles of wrapping trash. The celebration of love and joy that was born in the barren desert of Palestine is very different.

Love lifts us all. Even above the weight of forced familiarity, the spirit of giving soars. Linda and I are connected in ways we do not understand to a small island in the middle of the Pacific called “Maui.” We have returned to it every whale season for nearly thirty years. Our bond is that powerful. New shopping centers and asphalt have covered much of Maui since we first came, but they do not interfere with the spirit of Aloha there.

The commercial christmas is like the tons of asphalt that cover more of Maui each year, but the spirit of Aloha radiates through it like the spirit of Love radiates through the mountains of wrapping paper and trash that propel our economy from one selling season of to another, one season of consumption to another.
Christmas calls us to contribute. The commercial christmas calls us to consume. The spirit of Love, like the energy of Aloha, transforms us from consumers into contributors, from taking to giving, from expecting love from others to sharing it with others. For most people, this transformation is seasonal (temporary), but it doesn’t need to be. It can be a glimpse of your new life, your boundless compassion, and your fathomless love.
Happy Holi (Holy) Days,.

SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE

SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE

Mother Teresa said, “We cannot do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” In my experience, the smallest things require the greatest love. The smallest things we do are the intimate and personal choices we make each moment before we act. These choices are always between the intention of love and the intention of fear – between gratitude, caring, and patience, among others, and anger, jealousy, righteousness, among others.

These choices appear to us as as the smallest of small things, as interior experiences that we alone can enter and alter. Yet with our choices of love or fear we create the consequences of our lives and the contributions we make to the world. These choices are the origins of all things, great and small, they alone animate the one who chooses. You are the one who chooses.

When you do these “small things” with great love, your great love manifests in the Universe. When you do them with great fear, your great fear manifests. We cannot do great things with great love – only the small things that always create constructive consequences. Do you smile with joy (love), or to manipulate (fear)? Are you tender in order to nurture (love) or to create an image of a tender person?
Do you do make your choices with great love, or do you distract yourself with thoughts about “great things” and “small things”?

WHAT ILLUSIONS ARE YOU CAUGHT IN?

WHAT ILLUSIONS ARE YOU CAUGHT IN?

When your painful emotions seem to be caused by something outside of you, you are in an illusion. For example, your child falls from a tree, and you feel fear, anxiety, and panic. The fall seems to have caused these emotions, but if you look inside yourself, you will see that they are not new. You have experienced these emotions before, even before you had a child! The fall activated dynamics inside you and they cause the painful emotions that you experience. Other events will continue to activate them until you become familiar with these internal dynamics and move beyond their control.

The fall brings your attention to what you must change inside yourself. Chopping down the tree, scolding your child, and becoming angry at the neighbor who planted it will not change the dynamic in you that caused your painful emotions. Only you can change that dynamic in you. The illusion pulls your attention outward and demands that you change the world. In order to grow spiritually you must direct your attention inward and change yourself. The illusion is that someone or something outside you is responsible for your emotional pain. The reality is that you are responsible for continuing to experience it again and again rather than challenge the source of it in yourself and cultivate the source of loving experiences in yourself. This creates authentic power.

As you create authentic power, you begin to recognize the difference between the illusion in which painful emotional reactions occur and are blamed upon the external world and the reality of the dynamics inside you that create loving experiences and cultivate them.

The Most Dangerous Virus

The Most Dangerous Virus

Many people are speaking now and frequently about fear – of the political situation, unstable markets and weather, and now, a virus. Concern about the virus is now surpassing the other fears that frightened parts of our personalities put on inner display daily for us, if we are willing to look at (experience) them instead of distracting ourselves with food, work, sex, obsessions, and addictions. As we take these inner displays seriously and begin to explore them, a surprising discovery becomes observable, then noticeable, then unavoidable – the most invasive virus that we can experience today is fear. It is contagious, spreads quickly, and dangerous. It puts our ability to give the gifts that we were born to give at risk, and a life without giving them is a life of emotional pain, psychological pain, physical pain, every kind of pain.

There is no vaccine against fear, but there is a way to be healthy again if you become infected: Create authentic power. Frightened parts of your personality generate pain (you are infected when this happens) and loving parts of your personality relieve you of it when you cultivate them repeatedly (you become healthy again when this happens).

Think on this. Take precautions that you would take in any potentially dangerous circumstance, for example, handling very sharp knives in the kitchen, driving on the freeway, or trying to prove your self-worth by impressing others (pursuing external power). In the case of the virus, wash your hands often for at least twenty seconds (sing the alphabet song twice). Use your elbows or knuckles to avoid touching things with your hands, and keep your hands away from your face (viruses enter through mucus membranes including around your eyes). Bump elbows to greet one another instead of hugging. Use alcohol wipes (on the plane use them to clean arm rests, head rests, and trays).

Most important, do what is necessary to insure that you do not become infected with the truly dangerous virus of fear. If you allow it to grow in you, you will experience the very painful phenomenon of imploding under the fear of the collective. The physical virus is given to you to show you what is necessary to be physically healthy. This is symbolic, as is every experience in the Earth school. The destructive virus of fear is given to you to awaken you to what is necessary to move beyond fear permanently. This is far superior to what any vaccine can produce.

You can begin this process by enjoying yourself. That is a well-known and time-tested antidote to fear. Said another way, love is the only effective (and it is always effective) remedy to a life of fear.

Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is a time of unmistakably large new beginnings. By the time of the Winter Solstice, everything that began growing at the Summer Solstice has contracted into one seed of potential, and that seed begins to expand. Add to this the Christmas story, and Hanukah, the Season of Light, and the point is unmistakable. New beginnings happen, and they are wonderful when they do.

These three events happen annually, but the energy of them happens continually in the lives of countless people at countless times. It happens when a depression breaks for a moment, when grief lightens, anger subsides, jealousy eases, and life without pain seems a possibility again. Darkness begins a long or sudden disappearance, and a ray of light becomes visible.

This experience can be created by recognizing fear (anger, jealousy, overwhelm) when it appears in you, and deciding to act with love (gratitude, appreciation, patience) even while the fear you experience demands expression without cessation. That moment is the moment of creating authentic power. How often you experience it depends upon your choices, but the more often you do, the more the darkness you experience (anger, jealousy, vengeance) begins to lighten, and the world becomes more inviting.

These are the great moments. When you find yourself wanting one, or needing one, or desperate for one, remember the Winter Solstice and cultivate one in yourself.

No one else can.

Keep Your Eye on the Ball

Keep Your Eye on the Ball

Once there was only one ball, and it hypnotized us. It seemed to cause our joy and pain and our pleasure and misery. It seemed to cause everything, and everything depended upon it. That ball was the world.

Now another ball has appeared, and it has become the new star of the show. The show is human evolution. This new ball is our interior experiences. Previously we did not pay attention to them until they became too painful to ignore, for example, our rage, jealousy, or grief. We never thought about them in the context of our evolution. On the contrary, they hindered our ability to evolve – to manipulate and control ball one (the world). Now ball two (our interior experiences) is more important to our evolution than ball one!

A great transformation in human consciousness is underway. We are transforming from five-sensory humans that are limited to the perceptions of the five senses into multisensory humans whose perceptions are hugely more expansive and entirely different. Our evolution now requires each of us to consciously and wisely choose constructive intentions. Five-sensory humans think their actions create consequences. Multisensory humans see that their intentions create consequences. This is a game-changer.

What does that mean in terms of the coronavirus? Suppose, for example, that you are confined to a small space or even a large one, and you are miserable. You feel lonely, listless, or depressed. You have no job, your child is ill, or (and) you are angry at being told what to do. Five-sensory humans think that the world causes these experiences. Multisensory humans know that dynamics inside themselves cause these experiences when the world activates them. They see what five-sensory humans are not able to see. Until they change these interior dynamics, they will continue to produce painful emotions each time the world activates them. When the quarantine is lifted, your job returns, or your child becomes healthy, your difficult emotions will disappear, but the dynamics inside you that caused them will remain intact, and the world will continue to activate them until you change them.

Your issues are not between the world and you. They are between you and you. Plato, Buddha, and the Christ all fought their own demons and gained power from their decisions. All our great heroes did this. Could the Christ have gained the Glory that He did were He not tempted? Only you can choose a road that leads to health and love (power) or a road that leads to dis-ease and fear (powerlessness). When you focus on ball one (the world), you cannot do this. When you focus on ball two (your internal experiences), you give yourself the ability to choose between the constructive and destructive internal dynamics within you – between the joyful consequences of love and the painful consequences of fear.

Keep your eye on the ball.
